Chañaralll‏ (March 16, 2015)

well.... to be honest im going though withdrawls for copiapo... this place is tiny... and my comp is awful... remember last week when i was so excited because i knew him? yeah, when i knew him he was all cool and i was stoked, but..... hes ridiculous. i dont like to talk bad about people but im going to flip out with this kid... hes such a girl, and so bossy. and just.... i dont know how im going to survive it. he brushes his teeth like 200 times a day.

anyways... we had a few awesome lessons this week... we are teaching this family that should be getting baptized the 18th of april... they are super excited but they are a little lazy about their reading... and the husband works a ton so sometimes he is a sleep. but we have great suppor tfrom the branch to fellowship them and help them ot make it to church! they are a really cool family. 

alright alright alraight.... hahahahaha i just had to put a pragraph inbetween so that it looked more believable but that first one is all a lie! my comp is awesome! we get a long really really well... i already feel like i have been with him for like a month. we are super tight. we teach really well together. he is an awesome teacher... and we talk to so many people... we are constantly talking to people in the street. im loving it. its been a little hard with the investigators... we have had some toruble getting more people... but we are working hard and doing our best to talk with lots and lots of pople... the more people we talk to the more people we will be able to teach! plus somthing that we have been really good at together (did i already say this?) is asking for referrals from everyone... there are a lot of people who just dont want to talk to us... thats understandable. but we just ask them if they know anyone else who might be interested... usually they dont know anyone, but every once in a while they say someone... and usually that someone is receptive! so thats good stuff!

also... this place really is tiny... and i miss a tlittle bit copiapo... back where i had everything... we stuggled to find a place to eat here during lunchour... sooooo thats pretty crappy... bt thats how it goes. it really is a great place... i just have to get used to it... my body is struggling... i have alergy problems almost constantly... but its all surviverable... im thinking it might be because of our dog.... we arent supposed to have a dog... but this dog has been with the missionaries for 6 years at least... the whole town knows him... and the branch even more! plus there is nothing we could do to get rid of him... he just sleeps outside our pension... president knows about it, but the only hting we could do is kill him or wait until he dies... so we are obviously choosing option number 2... hes a fighter though! He is like the rocky balboa of dogs! because im pretty sure hes laready like 8 or nine years old in human years... but he goes up against 2 or three dogs his size and wins! always! unless there are more than 3 or there is a massive dog... but he fights somewhat frequently which is kindof a problem.. his name is eugenio... which is eugene in english... este perro les saca la mugre a todos los demas en serio. me impresiona.

Its fun to be in a little branch again though. everyone knows everyone... we had 54 people in church this week and they were so excited because thats the highest its been in a llong time... thats techinically 48 members because there are 6 missionaries here (6 missionaries here in this branch when there are 6 missionaries in our entire stake... nuts) i also gave a talk about the word of wisdom... its funny how easy a talk is for me now hahaha... i used to worry about it but i talked for 10 minutes and i didnt even use aqll of my material... also... my companion is the second counselor here so we have a really close connection with him... we have very little priesthood. and a lot of less actives who come like once a month... but we are gonna work hard to get this place lifted up! theres nothing else we can do but just work our hearts out! and thats what we ill do!

Also...  The Elders in my house are awesome... Elder Barrios, my comp from guatemala... the thrird comp from guate that ive had. Elder Jensen is from canadia... hahaha... we make fun of him a lot... but hes totally chill. hes form maple ridge british colombia... ive heard it super pretty up there but hes really chill. and with Elder Tate (thats my best friends name!!!"!!!!) Fuller from ... weston idaho... wich is west of preston, he went to west side high school. he says he talked to leslie once so that was a cool connection. he is originally from logan though. but hes a sweet guy. we have a oparty. hes kinda crazy.. but in a good way. we love eachother. so its gonna be an awesome cambio! (cometela E' Café es un cambio. aun te kiero :))

other things i wanted to say... life is still good! the sun is less terrible here... there are no supermarkets... i found a cool new type of toothbrush... colgate black... dont know if it was a rip off but its fun! im sleeping on the top bunk again... its starting to get cold at night... the last 6 months ive slept with a fan blowing on me... we are still cooking for ourselves... any random super cheap and quick recipies that dont require any mixes would be appreciated... annnndddd what else.... i got some new pants i found in the pension.... i have to iron my own shirts again... missing dryers... oh yeah!

this story deserves its seperate paragraph... we found this guy in a wheel chair. we visited him twice and he was super excited. he is awesome, a little deaf but just a great guy and really receptive, he wanted to get baptized! then we went back on friday... his family told him that he couldnt share with us anymore... his ex wife, his son. his grand daughter... they all cam and chewed him out and told him we were gonna brain wahs him, and he made us take our book of mormon back... that was sad... the world is just so far agaisnt anything that is Godly... but thats the work that we are part of... Salvation was never easy! we just have to keep doing our best and everything is gonna be alright! i love the Gospel and i want everyone else to have it and live it! 

i love you all! i love the mission! im learning to love chañaral... ;) but i am happy :) the people are fantastic we have a lot of people that we are finding. everyone knows everuyone, its like a big family.

Chañaral !!!! PUEBLIIIIITO‏ (March 9, 2015)

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! the time has again arrived... cambios! i was in my last sector maray for almost 6 months... and the time came when the Lord has called me to another place. i will now be in CHAÑARAL its a tiny liitle city type thing about 2 hours north of copiapo. a fishing town, i have been here for a good 2 hours and we have seen so many people that my companion knows! in a tiny town, everyone knows everyone, and everyone goes to the same place! so that has been fun! ive got a lot to get aquainted with here haha. it does have a fantastic view of the ocean from just about any place here though, so thats pretty awesome. i will have more pics and stuff next week. this week i left my camera cable in my suitcase in the pension so i cant upload squat. Im going to be here with Elder Barrios. he is also from Guatemala! he was Elder Gines companion before and i have know him for about 6 months as well. he is super cool and i already know we will get along great. so we are just gonna have to go to town and start to make this little branch a stake!

It was hard for me to leave copiapo. and maray more. i called a couple of people from my old sector to say goodbye to them but i was already half gone so that wasnt too bad. we ate lunch with Carlos, our awesome investigator who is just so ready for baptism it hurts, but heis afraid still. that was a little sad as well because we had a really good relationship with him, and he trusted a lot in us... but thus it its. then i had to say goodbye to fernando and his family... another hard one... i though for sure that i was going to see them get baptized... but he told me as i gave him a hug to say goodbye that i was going to have goodnews really soon... and i saw a ring on his ... womans... finger... so if they are getting married that is a huge step to be able to get batized. but the hardest one was definately saying goodbye to carolina... i was sharing with her for 8 months... ever since i got here to copiapo, she moved to maray and almost immediately i got moved as well... so that was a hard one... she cried a lot... i was about there as well... hard to leave all those people... but if its the will of the lord then i will go i will do. im sure that the missionaries are going to protect them well...

We found this massive family on saturday... we had contacted a lady in her house on thursday and set an appointment for saturday and we asked her ( as we try to always do) if she knew anyone else who could want or need to listen to us. so she mentioned one of her neighbors, and her her sisters and she said she was going to invite her sisters on saturday... we showed up to the house and they were all there waiting for us. 8 investigators.... we had an awesome lesson and asked their question which was "what religion did Christ have?" (awesome!!!) and they agreed to read and pray to be able to know. we invited them to the church and some of them werent able to , for previous commintments, but the oldest son went with his cousins and brother, and he also invited his girlfriend who went to church on sunday... so that was awesome! niracle family! This week we also had our exchanges with the assistants! we ad a good day! me and Elder Oribe took the part of the sector that didnt have any appointments, and we only taught one lesson that day... but we talked to ta ton of people who wanted us to visit them this coming week... so hopefully the sister missionaries who are going to be taking over that part of the sector will be able to find them all!!

that was also an adventure of this week. we had to go and buy all of the stuff that the sisters were going to need in their new apartment! i didnt realize how expensive all of this stuff was! and how hard it is to shop! price chacking and all sorts of stuff. plus most of the stuff that they had in stores they didnt actually have in the city, they had to ship it up from snatiago which took like 10 days... way too long. so it was an adventure and called for a large amount of stress. but it was a good learning experience! in the end it was entertaining! we got it all done. the last thing that they needed were the curtains and the bunk bed that both came in today.. after i had left haha.

I had a really good time with those two elders that last cambio... we had a party. they fed off of eachother so much... constantly laughing... but it was good. we learned a lot! we ahd a lot of sucess! we worked hard. im happy with our effort.

It was hard to say goodbye to elder sanchez now that hes going home... im going to miss him. im glad to know that at the very least, we ill all see eachother gain in the celestial kingdowm... but for now, my plan is to be incredibly rich and go visit all of them with my family. :) hahaha.

I love the mission! i love the gospel! i love you all!!!

Faith (March 2, 2015)

WE had an awesome meeting in antofagasta this week. i loved it. the last two that i have been to have really changed my mission! WE talked again about faith and more about our misisonary purpose. and then on the bus i had anawesome talk with Elder Bronson

Faith is and always will be the key to everything! in moroni 7 it says that. without faith everything is useless! we need it so much. if we just keep growing our faith, not just our belief in God but our faith, the whole world will keep getting simpler and happier. faith is the base of EVERYTHING. its funny how we as humans many times think that we have tons of faith as well but... many times we are just good at saying we have faith... anyways.

Im grateful for the gospel. if you go sit somewhere and peoplewatch you can tell just how many people really need this. we have so much to help them. they need to find the true plan of Christ. I wish i could better help people see the huge need they have for this and just take the decision! just do it!!!!! it will work! please!!!!! anyways... the Gospel is good. God loves us.

Im super grateful for repentance! how comforting is it to know that every day we can be better. sometimes when i learn somehting new that i need to do, or i realize that i have been failing in something i feel bad because i didnt realize it before or i wasnt doing it before. but thats why repentance exists. there is no use crying over spilled milk. you just have to pick up with what you have and move on. if im failng, i just need to get better and everything is gonna be ok. Its incredible to think about the mercy of God. forgiving those who crucified Jesus. Peter denied him 3 times in one night. if he can forgive even those. why cant he forgive us for everything that we have done being that we only live by faith. if we can just learn to repent quick and try and be better he will always accept us. it doenst matter what weve done, it matter what we do. 

This week i had in my hands the largest amount of money that i have ever had in my life... next week some sister misisonaries are coming to be in the other sector here. so we have been in charge of setting up their apartment! we have to buy everything... so its been fun! its incredible how much this stuff costs! and this is just the most basic! its a strange experience... setting up a house. i cant imagine if i had to think about dacorating and stuff on top of it... man. way much to ask of me haha.

WE have some really awesome people that we are teaching right now. i am so excited for their progress... The devil uses fear to try and debilitate the faith. They can feel the power, but its hard for them to make the decisions to really go for it with everything or not.. but thats our job! help them to have the faith to make covenants with God! thats what the mission is! i love it!

God Lives (February 23, 2015)

Hello once again audience! i hope you have all had a marvelous week! enjoy that cold! im currently sweating! bueeeeeeeeena! 

So this week there was something i was thinking about. we recently talked to a woman who was telling us that people who lived religiously just lived a fantasy. she believes in god, but she believes that a religious life is a lie... i was just thinking about that.... and she is so very wrong. i wihs there was a good way to tell her that. Religion isnt the fantasy. its the only true reality. one day we will die and we will go to heaven and we will realize that all this was true. The fantasy is when we try to pretend that we dont need God, or religion. in reality, there is no other way to find true happiness. God isnt a hobby, nor is he a belief that some people use to feel better about the bad stuff that happens in this world. Basically, He is the Way, the Truth, and the Light. If we live with him everything will be ok, God blesses those who keep his commandments, early or late. ITs also a little bit sad to think that i used to be somewhat on the same page, i didnt understand that this was real, i always said i did, but i didnt understand be cause subconsciously i didnt really have that firm knowledge. Now i know that, and i want everyone else to know that too. therefore! this week! try to remember that God is the reality! he is literally watching us! We are part of his plan. Try and Get a better relationship with He who is the only sure foundation.

We talked to a family on thursday who is just so prepared it hurts! The father has been having lots of problems with stress and its been giving him depresion, we taught him how the book of mormon could help him when he was stressed if he would read and say a prayer he would feel how God would calm him and help him... we got a call on saturday night from him asking us to go to his house, so we went over there seeing as our other appointment had fallen... and he told us that it worked! He was just so happy! i loved it! He went shopping that day and went and baught himself a new suit for sunday and he went and stayed for the whole three hours for the first time in forever! so that was incredible! he is just so excited and he is already sharing parts of his testimony all over the place. I dont know if i will be here long enough to see him get baptized... but he will get baptized soon. he is so close already. golden family. so much. plus his wife loved church. she has stacks full of fellowshipping friends, and a new returned sister missionary who is on the ball as well. she just took care of her all day long. it was sweet.

WE also found a few other families that im sure will be progressing more in the weeks to come, we found one family who was truly a miracle, we were talking to an inactive family and their little girl started talking about another girl who had recently moved in who had been going to church in another ward, so we went to go talk to them... also prepared. they just want the gospel. they went to the beach this weekend with the rest of chile, but today we are going to take them to the fHE that the members do every monday so thats gonna be awesome! The parents are less active, and the kids arent baptized, they were ging to church in another ward but then they had a few things happen, they stopped going and they moved like a month ago, so they are awesome.

Today is Elder chambis birthday, so i made him a cake to celebrate, and we went and worked on the engine of a members little van just for kicks and giggles, it was a fun time! it brought back memories... we took off the oil pan, then cranked the pump to get all the oil out, and when i was underneath, we took out the pump and everything that was left in the tubes came spilling out... and i got DRENCHED in oil... drenched i grabbed a rag and clogged the hole really fast but it was much too late haha. soooo that was fun haha! walking home in my shirt full of oil... 

Random thought. What have you done for someone who isnt a family member this week?

Faith (February 16, 2015)

Dear family!!! We had an awesome week! i hope you guys did too!!

This week we were shown by the Lord how immediate his blessings are. we started last week to try and exercise more faith as we left everyday to find news, and resolved to do everything we could to talk to the highest number of people ad ask everyone for references. even the people that we had just met, or when they obviously didnt want anything to do with the church. The lord blessed us in miraculous ways. and im sure we are gonna keep finding!!! thats the best. We can already see so many people. im sad that it took me so log to learn to simply exercise myfaith. but in the ed, better late than never. its gonna be great!!!

WE had one miracle family that moved in from antofagasta that came to us in the church ad told us that theywanted us to visit them. their daughter is a member but they aret. ad they want us to teach them. ttue miracles! we had another awesome family that we never saw coming when this family called us at 6 ad told us that they invited a family to come over for a fHE at 8 that same night. we shared a little about the pla of salvation and they are also super interested. plus we found a more people doing contacts in all places and we got a bunch of references. it may not have been the highest number of new peole youve ever seen. but it was immediate. and powerful. an answer to our faithful prayers!

Fernando is still just as awesome as ever. his family is currently in bolivia visiting for another week, so he is just home aloe a lot of times. we are goa try to go out and visit some people with him. also, we are going to teach his siter again this week. she had a baby like 3 weeks ago and we are hoping to share more with her andd get her to go with her brother to church. they have a really cool family. her daughter johanna has already been to church like 3 times and she loves it.

This family from antofagasta is truly Golden. we had an awesome lesson with them on friday... we talked about the  pla of salvation and helped them to really understand the point of it... it was so sweet. they may need a little time to adjust

The last 2 days were more of the test days... those days when you basiclally just end up walking around all day, plus only investigators went to church. but both times at night in the last hour we were shown that endurance is important because bioth times we were able to find people in that very last hour. walking aroud ALL day. for 5 hours straight. but that last hour we had to be working to be able to fid these people. 

This week we also made some deliscios food... new recipies for home... lomo saltado... in spanish thats called jumped sirloin... but it was tasty! who knew that i could eat red peppers onions and tomatos??? God sent me to Chile just to learn that i think hahaha. 

and we went to the mall on monday and ate in the foodcourt... i spent almost 8 bucks on a combo... a little one. without refills. so that was sad... but the burger was tasty!

Elder Sanchez and Elder Chambi continue to kill me with their stunts. with one of them i would be laughing a lot. with both... man. they just feed off each other like crazy. this week they went totally racist against me for everything. they start to make up these stories about random stuff, or they blame me for eating their food and such and i just laugh constantly... its terrible! all in jokes though. 

The mission is great! im still just learning like crazy nand loving life. there is nothing better than enjoying evry minute! these experiences are priceless!

Anyways! i love you all to death!! have a great week! the spirit is guiding us always! It has helped me so much! the church is true!

God's Plan (February 9, 2015)

We had an awesome week this week! my favorite part was the leadership council that we had on thursday. we traveled all night wednesday, had the meeting all day thursday and then got back home at like 3 in the morning on friday morning. its a party, but its soooo worth it.

God really just sends you exactly what you need when you need it. i know ive said this before but many times i feel like ive already learned a lesson about something until i learn a bit more and just get to the next level. That happened this thursday. they talked about Faith. man... i knew all the things they tlaked about but some of the words really just struck me. Faith is so important in missionary work. just having the hope really that everything is gonna go well, and when it doesnt having the faith to just keep moving forward and trusting that there is a reason beyond your own understanding. God is always blessing us according to our faith. and as hard as i may have been working maybe i havent had that constant faith and hope that we are going to have sucess. but thats why we have repentance right? we can all change and be better. every time we learn something new we just have to try and apply it. do better. every day. simple.

The past week has been full of dissapointments. really just about everything we have had planned has fallen every day. but thats ok. its all gonna work out. as we keep moving with faith and dilligence God has promised His blessings and His promises are always completed. for example... sturday we had walked all day long, from appointment that didnt work out to appointment that didnt work out, trying to talk to people and such but with basically 0 sucess... so we were walking to contact someone that said that we could come by but in march because they are going to go to the south of chile for the next month or so... and we decided we should just go pass by for this family we had contacted a while ago... so we passed by and knocked on the door and nobody was there... right as we were ready to go, the guy got home.... opened the door and let us in... alright... welll we would prefer to be with the while family but thats ok. its something... then right as we were starting.... the whole family got home! came in and sat down to listen! We had one of those lessons where you can feel that the people really understand the importance of what we are teaching and want to follow. God blessed us right in that moment when we were starting to get down, and He whowed us that he can send miracles. So now we just have to keep going and the miracles that he showes us will keep coming... we will continue learnign just as much about God as the people we teach. thats why the mission is so dang awesome!!!!

I love teaching now, ever since i trained in vallenar i have felt that my teaching has changed drastically. it used to be a lot more of just a memorized ritual of telling people a lot of info that they never understood. then i had a while when i just kinda taught a lot of random principles using the scriptures but without much preach my gospel info... but i have felt the huge difference in my teaching as i have learned how to apply the lessons to people. help them to understand the principles we are teaching not to just be present as we talk, and not to just teach about Christ without a set direction really. I like reading Preach my Gospel because i have read the lessons like a million times, but as i study i start to pick up new things, and make my ability to teach a specific principle better.

i dont know if i already wrote this or not but talking about how God sends us what we need when we need it. I was talking to an Elder the other day and he said that President Dalton had told him about what happened when he called me to train. i didnt feel ready at all, but i was willing to follow the assignment. and PResident had asked this missionary how i was doing in my sector and he told president Dalton that i was having some problems, that it was a bit rough, and president told him... "well, i need you to keep an eye on him then, because i felt that he needs to train right now." how right was he! i will always say that training changed my life.

last thought for the day. in the council on thursday i learned something awesome, in spanish, we dont have an index to the scriptures, its a Scripture study guide. and in there, when you look up a word (just like in english) it shows you the "see also" words... and when you llok up joy in spanish, which is Gozo... there is only 1 word that goes with it. obedience. that is so very true.

The gospel is great my family! i invite all of you that read this to strengthen your testimonies and to live the gospel more fully! i promise you will have more blessing and more joy! i love you all so much!!! i hope that this week is amazing.

Elder Gold

First week of cambios‏ (February 2, 2015)

Whew! the time just fliiiieeeeesss bye. every week is faster than the last. its so crazy. we had a pretty good week. we got to know lots of people with my new Comp Elder Chambi. hes from Arequipa Peru. there is currently a temple being built there. hes a fun guy. we all get along really well. hes really funny. and so is Elder Sanchez... which means.... i am now the butt of all jokes hahaha. but its ok. everyone in a while they get in these massive trash talk sessions with eachother, thats entertaining! but we all love eachother a lot! its all just in joking! Life is happy. its super duper hot down here right now.. the thing is, the temperature is actually pretty nice, if i stand in the shade forever its warm but like a happy warm, but the SUN here is just incredible! you can feel it burning through any sunscreen you may have on! without the sun i would be a happy camper. im still a happy camper. but i would be a happier less sweaty camper :)

Like i said, Elder Gines went home last week. He finished the mission. i miss him! he was one of my best friends here in the mission. its cool to know that we will be able to get back together back in BYU, that is if he doesnt get married before then!!!

People sometimes make me laugh, Last week trying to send all the missionaries to their new sectors we had sooooo many angry bus people telling us that we couldnt put our bags on the bus. at first i was struggling to maintain myself calm because i dont really enjoy people screaming in my face, but then i was able to just be calm and laugh it off. we had one person who let us put the first bag of one of the sister missionaries on the bus and when we went to put the second one on he rejected it... so i explained to him (calmly) that what we have in our bags is everything we have for two years and if she didnt get the bag on the bus she wouldnt have clothes to wear in the city she was going to be in. he started screaming at me telling me it wasnt his problem and that he makes the rules and that we werent going to be putting the bag on. so i asked the sister wich bag had more clothes in and she said it was the one that hadnt made it onto the bus. so, then i had to start begging him to just change the bags out so that she could have clothes wich he didnt want to permit either telling me that i must be kiiding, trying to play with the bags putting them in and taking them back out and that i had already put it in and it was too late. THANKFULLY, the lord softened his heart and after staying calm and offering to go gget the bag myself he finally permitted it. hopefully we will be changing buses before next cambio because mission wide we had huge problems with it. but thats ok! just hte adventures of the world! Plus when we went to go send the bags thorugh a shiping company it was super fast and really cheap. it was supposed to arrive 2 days from the ship date and only cost like 20 bucks per bag. lots of blessings.

We met all sorts of new people this week. thats one of the cool things about cambios. everything changes, and somehow that makes you be in different situations. so we have been in the attitude of finding more poeople to teach and we have been able to meet lots of new poeple and find people that we were never able to get in contact with before. its been a good week. we also had a lot of appointments fall on us but thats just culture here. all is well.

Funny thing about summer here that i cant remember if i have already commented... Everyone takes their vacations at the same time. everyone. so there is never anyone around. for example most wards here in copiapo drop by about a fourth of their attendance. if it usually had 80 it has like 60. but for some reason summer is also one of the best times to get new people to go to church. for example this sunday we had a lady who hasnt gone to church in almost 4 years go again! hopefully she will keep herself active! if she is active she activates the rest of her family with her! thats like 10 people more and 2 of them who arent baptized. so we are gonna be working with her! but that was a complete surprise for us! usually she doesnt even share with us when we go. we share with her husband who has started to be a lot more active as well.

Another novelty this week.... the Elders in my old sector Palomar got robbed... again. like three weeks ago they broke in while they were sleeping and and opened the unlocked door and stole about 400 dollars or so worth of stuff... and this friday we went over there to do aparetments checks and i filled out the paper and wrote that they needed to move because it wasnt safe.... just to prove my point that very day, like 3 hours after while they were out working they came back in, broke the locked door (crappy cardboard) and stole about 200 dollars worth of what was left! so they are doing an emergency move. they moved all their stuff into the house of a member and they are sleeping with us for now. sadly you have to get robbed twice to be able to move out of crappy pensions! BUT! im super grateful for 5th floor apartments with good doors and locks in apartments with security! yay!!

Its awesome to see how the Lord is hastening his work (alsost said apresurando becasue i couldnt remember that word)! we had a meeting with the ward, and a nother meeting with the zone leaders of the stake on sunday and they are starting to apply some awesome techniques to go out and strenthen every one of the weak members one by one. The Lord is calling for all of us to work right now, and he is preparing the people to be able to come back. When we hav faith and we put forth effort we can see huge miracles. My favorite part about the mission is seeing people who have changed their lives and the joy they have gained. even if that just comes from becoming fully active in the chrch after some years. when they are able to be truly converted it is the best. I love preaching the gospel. i dont know what i would do with out this experience. i will never change. this isnt just a mission for 2 years, this is the mission of a lifetime. God is real. and he loves us and Guides us. I hope that we can all remember that!!
