Rain! (March 30, 2015)

wwwwwwooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww! Family ofmine! because you are all my family! this week has been straight nuts. so i have lots to say. and i dont think i am going to be able to say it all.... im gonna have to save lots of stories for later and just explain to you all what happened hahahaha.... goodness i dont know how im going to do this. Also! it has come to my attention that i use a lot of elipses es en... those things. in my emails. therefore i am going to try and stop. i dont know if i will suceed. because technically it should be faster to jsut throw in a period haha. but why have just one when you can have 3!!! alright, im going to start with this story. but i need you guys to remember not to worry about me cuz im just fine.

alrighty! where to start... so many details to include! We came here to Taltal on teusday in the morning. we arrived at about 9 o clock to haveexchanges with Elder Fakahafua and Elder Walker up here. the night before it had rained in chañaral but it was one of those 10 minute rains that just left lots of puddles because we arent prepared for rain here in the north. so we had a good day. learned lots. Elder Walker is awesome. he is a super super special Elder. like an angel. He loves everyone. the whole day was cloudy and we ended up walking almost all day because nobody wanted to listen to us, but we took advatage of our time in the street to talk to lots of people and set up a few appointments for them during the week. got back to the house and almost immediately it started raining. itwas a normal amount of rain... it was a lot for what it rains here but it wasnt like some of the rain that i felt in mexico. we went to bed like normal and called it a day. when we got up in the morning... it was still raining! and there was a ditch size stream of water running down the road by our house. we called the elders in chañaral to ask how our house was there... it was fine. the Sister missionaries in the branch called us to tell us that their house was full of water and so we went into action mode to get poeple help and we left ourselves to go work. we went to an old ladies house that was full of water and built her a little canal to make the rain go out the door insterad of go all over the house. so she was ok. then it was 9 o clock and our bus was leaving at 10 so we ran back to the house got changed got ourstuff together and got down to the bus station and the other elders went to the sisters house to help them out. while we were helping the old lady the phones had cut so we were without communication... and we went down to the bus station that was all closed up, also full of water. and waited for a while jsut in case the bus was coming. it never did. so we were lost in this city without a phone, keys to the house or anyone that we knew... we decided after a bit to go up to a members house that the elders had showed us and try to find it... and as we were passing a bank a lady called out "goodbye Elders of Israel" YYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY salvation!!! we talked to her and she gave us a map to her house wehre we found her husband who helped us out with a place to leave the bag and a place to change clothes. and a map to find the siters house to get back together with the other elders!
we hleped out the hermanas for a while and got them moved out of their house where the roof was falling in. and had the opportunity to go on a ride on the upper part of the city where the rain had caused quite a bit of erosion but all was well. the phones finally kicked back on in the afternoon and thats when we learned that Chañaral was destroyed. the river of water and mud that had come down had filled up the downtown part of the city, and destroyed porpoerty and many houses. as well as ruining basically anything that was downtown, like a few of the stores of members here. wow.... that was really hard for us to hear. but thats how it was. we wanted to get back to our city to hlep them all out... but the roads were all destroyed form the water. we talked to president dalton and he told us we needed to stay put in taltal... darn... so we went to work. at the end of the day we got invited to drink hot chocolate in a members house and  we took a break to drink a bit to warm up from the wet clothes (the rain had stopped in the afternoon at like 6). we left to head back home and as we left the house the firemen announced that there was more water coming down and that it was going to flow down this street so they needed to move their cars. then we went over a hill and saw the same thing happening. as we crossed that street we saw that the wave of muddy water (more mud than water) was coming down. about a block away but it didnt seem to serious so we just kept going home. the next morning we got up and worked like normal went out to try and find people and by food becaus ethey had told us that the roads were gonna be closed for 10 to 15 days... so we went and got food as fast as we could to be able to survive for that amount of time in case of emergency. no body really wanted to listen and in our search for people we came over a hill to see what that tiny wave of mud was last night... the entire entrance of the city was a moving piece of mud. sooo much. there were trucks and houses eaten by the mud. carrying things down it. here in the north everybody used to build in the valleys next to the sea so they had fresh water and the ability to fish for a living and have a little bit of agriculture from the river to feed themselves. the rivers have been dried up since the mines came around but the river beds are still there. and when it rains a lot thats what fills up. but what had happened its that they had built these giant dams to take in the major part of the water so that it didnt destroy the city. but they got clogged by the litter and stuff that people had sent up their and they broke, and sent waves of mud and water down towards the city. i have some videos and pictures of that... madness. so the next day the mud flow had stopped enough to be able to cross the city and we went to town imeediately to start getitng mud and stuff out of peoples houses... i dont have that many pictures because... i was a littel busy and dirty. but we had a party. i was TIRED!!! plus... we had only brought a pair of sweats, slippers, an extra pair of socks and undies and what we had on... so i was wearing crocks... and Elder Fakahafuas clothes hahaha. but the crocks just got stuck everywhere so i had to take them off and carry them... mnaaaannnnn my feat were so sore. i have baby feet and i was walking on.... it hurt. i got to the house. washed my feet and just layed down from relief because it hurt so bad. but we made it. that was the biggest day of work. and we got to eat peruvian food with the branch president here so that was super happy! yay. then that night president dalton showed up with his wife in two trucks full of food! and he gave us a little biut of money for emergencies. and the next day i bought some really cheap tennis shoes with it... that was also heavenly... then on sturday we worked again in the morning and in the afternoon another truck chuck full of food got here from antofagasta... i forgot to say this... we have light here, but we havent had water since thursday night. which was a blessing from God. because we got back from working took showers, and washed clothes... the few that we had. and then there was no more water. i was so happy. on sunday President Dalton came to our church on his way to Chañaral and we had to speak in church... they let us know about 5 minutes before. so i was really greatful for moms advice on how to prepare a talk. it turned out really well i thought. i was able to throw out a REALLLLLLLY rough outline. and just kinda follow the spirit haha. but it was a good talk i felt like. then we went to work organizing the rest of the stuff and sending it out to the people who needed it or the rest of the afternoon. and ate with an hermana that i love just because she gave us such good food and really just pampered us even though there was no water. i was really grateful to her.

and today we finally got cell phone coverage back in chañaral so i was able to talk to them again... and presidnet called us, he was gonna take us out of the zone and send us to another place for the next few weeks... which would have been nice on one end... but the branch president in chañaral se puso choro y le dijo que no no mas. teniamos que volver y que el mismo iba a venir a taltal a buscarnos... is coming to get us, we get to go back to chañaral on wednesday!!!!!! yayayayayayayay! im so happy. we are gonna have a lot more work to do there because they are way worse off but im so happy to be bale to go over there and help  out my peeps.

im grateful for the blessing that i have recieved. i feel like we needed to be here tal tal... for a lot of reasons. but especially just because we were able to communicate with the people in chañaral because they havent had cell phones until today. i was able to call a member who by soime miracle had service and could give me updates. it was important for us to be here. God has a perfect plan for all of us. i have said it before and i will keep saying it forever.

Have a great week! dont worry about me! there is lots of work to do but the situation is under control! plus, in chañaral they have water and electricity. and we dont have it here. so now we are anxiously waiting wednesday! love you!

thank you!

Chaña... Tal Tal‏ (March 28, 2015)

well family! we have permission again to write you a tiny message to tell you that we are all alive! so! just so you know! im alive! i dont know if it was actually big news in the wowrld what happened here... but its incredible how big of a mess this rain made! it was a good rain. but for this place it was like a typhoon. all of the dirt started mmmoving... so many people got mud everywhere... plus it doesnt help that they never ever think that its gonna happen so they dont prepare at all.

anyways... i was in chañaral right? well teusday morning we came up to tal tal about 2 hours north to do exchanges with the missionaries and we were supposedly coming back on wednesday but then it rained and the entire world shut down. so we have been stuck in tal tal with what we were wearing an extra pair of undies and socks and pjs. but its been an adventure! chañaral got hit worst... but we arent there... which is a blessing but its sure hard to not be there at the same time... anyways... everyone is ok. all of the missionaries are ok. also, just remeber, the news shows the worst of the worst... where the missionaries are living there were no rivers of ud or anything like that. todo bien. so! i will have lots to talk about on monday! love you all! we are all safe! thank you for your prayers! dont worry about me!

Elder Gold

i took out like 70 bucks or so because i didnt have much money and we had to buy food and stuff to prepare while there was... but everything is fine. president has already made it into the city and all is well... but just so you know.

Mom's note:  The following are all pictures from March 17-23...before Tal Tal.

Chañaralll‏ (March 16, 2015)

well.... to be honest im going though withdrawls for copiapo... this place is tiny... and my comp is awful... remember last week when i was so excited because i knew him? yeah, when i knew him he was all cool and i was stoked, but..... hes ridiculous. i dont like to talk bad about people but im going to flip out with this kid... hes such a girl, and so bossy. and just.... i dont know how im going to survive it. he brushes his teeth like 200 times a day.

anyways... we had a few awesome lessons this week... we are teaching this family that should be getting baptized the 18th of april... they are super excited but they are a little lazy about their reading... and the husband works a ton so sometimes he is a sleep. but we have great suppor tfrom the branch to fellowship them and help them ot make it to church! they are a really cool family.

alright alright alraight.... hahahahaha i just had to put a pragraph inbetween so that it looked more believable but that first one is all a lie! my comp is awesome! we get a long really really well... i already feel like i have been with him for like a month. we are super tight. we teach really well together. he is an awesome teacher... and we talk to so many people... we are constantly talking to people in the street. im loving it. its been a little hard with the investigators... we have had some toruble getting more people... but we are working hard and doing our best to talk with lots and lots of pople... the more people we talk to the more people we will be able to teach! plus somthing that we have been really good at together (did i already say this?) is asking for referrals from everyone... there are a lot of people who just dont want to talk to us... thats understandable. but we just ask them if they know anyone else who might be interested... usually they dont know anyone, but every once in a while they say someone... and usually that someone is receptive! so thats good stuff!

also... this place really is tiny... and i miss a tlittle bit copiapo... back where i had everything... we stuggled to find a place to eat here during lunchour... sooooo thats pretty crappy... bt thats how it goes. it really is a great place... i just have to get used to it... my body is struggling... i have alergy problems almost constantly... but its all surviverable... im thinking it might be because of our dog.... we arent supposed to have a dog... but this dog has been with the missionaries for 6 years at least... the whole town knows him... and the branch even more! plus there is nothing we could do to get rid of him... he just sleeps outside our pension... president knows about it, but the only hting we could do is kill him or wait until he dies... so we are obviously choosing option number 2... hes a fighter though! He is like the rocky balboa of dogs! because im pretty sure hes laready like 8 or nine years old in human years... but he goes up against 2 or three dogs his size and wins! always! unless there are more than 3 or there is a massive dog... but he fights somewhat frequently which is kindof a problem.. his name is eugenio... which is eugene in english... este perro les saca la mugre a todos los demas en serio. me impresiona.

Its fun to be in a little branch again though. everyone knows everyone... we had 54 people in church this week and they were so excited because thats the highest its been in a llong time... thats techinically 48 members because there are 6 missionaries here (6 missionaries here in this branch when there are 6 missionaries in our entire stake... nuts) i also gave a talk about the word of wisdom... its funny how easy a talk is for me now hahaha... i used to worry about it but i talked for 10 minutes and i didnt even use aqll of my material... also... my companion is the second counselor here so we have a really close connection with him... we have very little priesthood. and a lot of less actives who come like once a month... but we are gonna work hard to get this place lifted up! theres nothing else we can do but just work our hearts out! and thats what we ill do!

Also...  The Elders in my house are awesome... Elder Barrios, my comp from guatemala... the thrird comp from guate that ive had. Elder Jensen is from canadia... hahaha... we make fun of him a lot... but hes totally chill. hes form maple ridge british colombia... ive heard it super pretty up there but hes really chill. and with Elder Tate (thats my best friends name!!!"!!!!) Fuller from ... weston idaho... wich is west of preston, he went to west side high school. he says he talked to leslie once so that was a cool connection. he is originally from logan though. but hes a sweet guy. we have a oparty. hes kinda crazy.. but in a good way. we love eachother. so its gonna be an awesome cambio! (cometela E' Café es un cambio. aun te kiero :))

other things i wanted to say... life is still good! the sun is less terrible here... there are no supermarkets... i found a cool new type of toothbrush... colgate black... dont know if it was a rip off but its fun! im sleeping on the top bunk again... its starting to get cold at night... the last 6 months ive slept with a fan blowing on me... we are still cooking for ourselves... any random super cheap and quick recipies that dont require any mixes would be appreciated... annnndddd what else.... i got some new pants i found in the pension.... i have to iron my own shirts again... missing dryers... oh yeah!

this story deserves its seperate paragraph... we found this guy in a wheel chair. we visited him twice and he was super excited. he is awesome, a little deaf but just a great guy and really receptive, he wanted to get baptized! then we went back on friday... his family told him that he couldnt share with us anymore... his ex wife, his son. his grand daughter... they all cam and chewed him out and told him we were gonna brain wahs him, and he made us take our book of mormon back... that was sad... the world is just so far agaisnt anything that is Godly... but thats the work that we are part of... Salvation was never easy! we just have to keep doing our best and everything is gonna be alright! i love the Gospel and i want everyone else to have it and live it!

i love you all! i love the mission! im learning to love chañaral... ;) but i am happy :) the people are fantastic we have a lot of people that we are finding. everyone knows everuyone, its like a big family.

take care of yourselves! be obedient! keep praying! remember to love the gospel! have an awesome week!

Silly boys

Chañaral !!!! PUEBLIIIIITO‏ (March 9, 2015)

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! the time has again arrived... cambios! i was in my last sector maray for almost 6 months... and the time came when the Lord has called me to another place. i will now be in CHAÑARAL its a tiny liitle city type thing about 2 hours north of copiapo. a fishing town, i have been here for a good 2 hours and we have seen so many people that my companion knows! in a tiny town, everyone knows everyone, and everyone goes to the same place! so that has been fun! ive got a lot to get aquainted with here haha. it does have a fantastic view of the ocean from just about any place here though, so thats pretty awesome. i will have more pics and stuff next week. this week i left my camera cable in my suitcase in the pension so i cant upload squat. Im going to be here with Elder Barrios. he is also from Guatemala! he was Elder Gines companion before and i have know him for about 6 months as well. he is super cool and i already know we will get along great. so we are just gonna have to go to town and start to make this little branch a stake!

It was hard for me to leave copiapo. and maray more. i called a couple of people from my old sector to say goodbye to them but i was already half gone so that wasnt too bad. we ate lunch with Carlos, our awesome investigator who is just so ready for baptism it hurts, but heis afraid still. that was a little sad as well because we had a really good relationship with him, and he trusted a lot in us... but thus it its. then i had to say goodbye to fernando and his family... another hard one... i though for sure that i was going to see them get baptized... but he told me as i gave him a hug to say goodbye that i was going to have goodnews really soon... and i saw a ring on his ... womans... finger... so if they are getting married that is a huge step to be able to get batized. but the hardest one was definately saying goodbye to carolina... i was sharing with her for 8 months... ever since i got here to copiapo, she moved to maray and almost immediately i got moved as well... so that was a hard one... she cried a lot... i was about there as well... hard to leave all those people... but if its the will of the lord then i will go i will do. im sure that the missionaries are going to protect them well...

We found this massive family on saturday... we had contacted a lady in her house on thursday and set an appointment for saturday and we asked her ( as we try to always do) if she knew anyone else who could want or need to listen to us. so she mentioned one of her neighbors, and her her sisters and she said she was going to invite her sisters on saturday... we showed up to the house and they were all there waiting for us. 8 investigators.... we had an awesome lesson and asked their question which was "what religion did Christ have?" (awesome!!!) and they agreed to read and pray to be able to know. we invited them to the church and some of them werent able to , for previous commintments, but the oldest son went with his cousins and brother, and he also invited his girlfriend who went to church on sunday... so that was awesome! niracle family! This week we also had our exchanges with the assistants! we ad a good day! me and Elder Oribe took the part of the sector that didnt have any appointments, and we only taught one lesson that day... but we talked to ta ton of people who wanted us to visit them this coming week... so hopefully the sister missionaries who are going to be taking over that part of the sector will be able to find them all!!

that was also an adventure of this week. we had to go and buy all of the stuff that the sisters were going to need in their new apartment! i didnt realize how expensive all of this stuff was! and how hard it is to shop! price chacking and all sorts of stuff. plus most of the stuff that they had in stores they didnt actually have in the city, they had to ship it up from snatiago which took like 10 days... way too long. so it was an adventure and called for a large amount of stress. but it was a good learning experience! in the end it was entertaining! we got it all done. the last thing that they needed were the curtains and the bunk bed that both came in today.. after i had left haha.

I had a really good time with those two elders that last cambio... we had a party. they fed off of eachother so much... constantly laughing... but it was good. we learned a lot! we ahd a lot of sucess! we worked hard. im happy with our effort.
It was hard to say goodbye to elder sanchez now that hes going home... im going to miss him. im glad to know that at the very least, we ill all see eachother gain in the celestial kingdowm... but for now, my plan is to be incredibly rich and go visit all of them with my family. :) hahaha.

I love the mission! i love the gospel! i love you all!!!

have an awesome week!
